The rise of the creator economy has meant that millions of entrepreneurs and content creators are earning income online through video content creation.
This business strategy, however, carries a heavy risk for even established creators. At the time of writing, April 2026, YouTube has demonetised millions of channels, and TikTok is bringing in features that utilise AI to ‘remix’ creator content.
In this article, we take a look at the recent wave of YouTube demonetisations and all the developments in video-sharing platforms that could impact content creators’ pockets negatively.
We also take a look at what you, as an entrepreneur can do about all of this.
Here goes…
Monetisation Rules

On most video-sharing platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, creators can get paid for views on their content via monetisation programs.
The problem is that the bar for entry to these programs is pretty high. On YouTube, for example, a creator needs a minimum of 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours to be eligible for the scheme.
The TikTok Rewards Program works on qualified views, and creators get paid per 1000 ‘qualified’ views.
The issue for most creators is that these platforms are heavily reliant on opaque algorithms.
These systems impose strict monetisation rules, and many have adopted artificial intelligence to restrict certain channels from achieving visibility.
Many demonetisation decisions are carried out autonomously via AI.
These rules can often severely impact the financial stability of creators.
AI Demonetisation

YouTube is the most popular video-sharing site in the world and boasts 20 million video uploads per day.
However, it’s not unknown for even established creators to get demonetised.
Changes in YouTube’s rules around creator content can wreak havoc on a creator’s income.
One recent change is YouTube’s crackdown on AI-generated content. YouTube has already demonetised over 12 million channels via this new policy.
Many creators are ‘falling in between the cracks’ and are allegedly being demonetised unfairly due to their ‘creative’ use of AI in their videos.
Unfortunately, the algorithm is probably not yet that adept at differentiating genuine original AI animation from AI-generated ‘slop’.
Therefore, some content creators are being caught in the crossfire.
Of course, filtering out ‘AI slop’ is probably a good thing, but the issue remains that these algorithmic changes often impact many creators unfairly.
These rule changes often make it even more difficult for new content creators to get a foot in the door to qualify for monetisation.
Controversial Topic Demonetisation

Another area prime for demonetisation is channels that post on controversial topics.
Algorithms based on advertiser-friendly content may find channels that post such videos unsatisfactory and therefore penalise, demonetise, or even remove content entirely.
Demonetisation can occur in several ways; sometimes a particular video is ‘shadow- banned’, meaning that it receives little to no distribution. It is effectively invisible to viewers despite being uploaded and visible to the creator.
In serious cases, entire channels can be removed from the Partner Program, reducing all income to zero.
This can sometimes occur without warning and overnight.
TikTok Demonetisation

TikTok, being a more recent but fast-growing platform, has been historically less generous to creators when it comes to revenue sharing than YouTube.
TikTok previously used a ‘Creator Fund’ to compensate creators, but that system generated much criticism due to small payouts despite user content generating hundreds of thousands of views.
TikTok changed the rules, and now monetisation is expanded, but the eligibility requirements have also changed, meaning that a creator now needs at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in a 30-day period to be eligible.
This rule change alone effectively demonetised many smaller creators.
TikTok has also been accused of restricting video reach and demonetising videos without warning or explanation.
Some content creators argue that the platform’s monetisation rules make it hard to make it a stable source of income.
TikTok Remix Culture

Another concerning development is one of the ‘remix culture’.
This allows users to use elements of other creators’ content. For example, the reuse of audio or video clips to create new content.
TikTok in particular has encouraged this culture and has automatically opted in a segment of content creators to this ‘experiment’.
This feature allows content creators to use AI to ‘remix’ other content creators’ content, allowing for the creation of memes, altered AI-generated images or completely reimagined content.
Paradoxically, all this is happening while at the same time these platforms are restricting the monetisation of AI-generated content.
What Entrepreneurs Must Know

Unfortunately, things have changed for content creators.
Even established content creators need to sit up and take notice.
It’s clear that video-sharing platforms are restricting the number of channels that are eligible to join revenue-sharing programs.
This means that smaller platforms or new creators may find it increasingly hard to generate income from this model.
Even larger platforms are noticing a decrease in revenues generated.
In addition, the rise of ‘remix’ culture, in particular by TikTok, sets an alarming precedent. If every user is allowed to remix content, it raises the question of who actually owns the generated content.
The answer is probably buried deep in the terms and conditions of the platform concerned.
Furthermore, if the generated content is being created by AI, which in itself is being demonetised, this only leads to one outcome. That is, many creators’ content will be rehashed, reused via AI and therefore eventually ineligible for monetisation.
The concern is that if YouTube eventually follows this trend of remix culture, all bets could be off, and all creators’ income streams could be placed at serious risk.
What To Do?

Savvy entrepreneurs and content creators, whether large or small, should not be relying on one platform or income stream.
Do not fall into the trap of thinking the gravy train will continue forever.
Many of these platforms are run by large corporations that do not care about your income or your liabilities. Their only concern is that of their shareholders and profitability.
Therefore, content creators should diversify.
Upload to multiple sharing platforms. Avoid building your business entirely on ‘someone else’s land’.
Have backups of all your content offline. Develop your own online presence and website.
Collect subscriber emails via competitions, online forms and other marketing methods and add them to your email list.
If you do get demonetised or banned, your email list will be ‘gold’, so you can direct your followers easily to another platform.
Should the worst happen, do you have a backup plan to continue to grow your content creation business?
If the answer is no, then you are in a precarious position, especially with the rise in demonetisation, AI and remix culture.
If your income is dependent on ad revenue, a single demonetised video can erase months of expected earnings. The creator economy does not provide any protection against dramatic changes in revenue.
This is not to scare you; this is simply how the content creation market appears to be developing.
Final Thoughts

The content creation business model offers many advantages, but there are some risks.
Savvy entrepreneurs should take note that the rules are changing fast.
The introduction of new algorithms, AI content demonetisations, and, at the same time, the encouragement of the ‘remixing’ using AI is destabilising creator revenues.
However, with all this change comes a great opportunity. The thirst for original content is constantly growing.
Entrepreneurs who protect themselves and diversify across multiple platforms could put themselves in a good position for the rising creator economy.
Savvy entrepreneurs should aim to back up all their content offline and collect subscriber emails via marketing campaigns to protect themselves should deplatforming or demonetisation occur suddenly.
Are you ready to make the change?
Good luck!
