This could mean original content creators will be pushed further down the rankings by the algorithm.
While many content creators are already feeling the impact of AI and demonetisation threats, this new proposal poses yet another challenge for beleaguered content creators.
While the proposal is currently limited to the UK, if successful, the impact on original content creators’ revenue streams could be devastating.

YouTube has formally warned content creators that this proposal could have negative impacts.
The warning states that the UK Government is running a public consultation called “Watch This Space”.
The proposal includes mandatory changes to how content is discovered on YouTube.
YouTube warns that “it could direct audiences away from your channel”.

YouTube is urging content creators to get involved and share their opinions and feedback in the consultation process.
It should be noted that this proposal is still in the consultation phase, and new legislation would need to be passed for a final decision.
However, if passed, the impact could be devastating for UK Content Creators.
YouTube urges that content creators share their views before the consultation closes on August 31st 2026, so not long to go at the time of writing (July 2026).
Why Does It Matter?
Some may be thinking, well, I’m not in the UK, so it doesn’t affect me. Yes, that is correct, for now.
If this is passed by the UK, it sets a precedent that other countries could follow too.
Think of all the advertising revenue share that is currently flowing to independent content creators. YouTube makes $40 billion in advertising revenue, with an estimated 55% going to content creators.
Now imagine that revenue stream preferentially directed to mainstream news outlets, production companies and mainstream media personalities.
If the UK is successful in passing this proposal, it is highly likely that other countries will follow.
The lure of advertising revenue share for major news outlets and production houses will be too enticing.

If content creators sit back and allow this proposal to get through, the impact on content creators worldwide could be huge.
Secondly, content creators need to diversify, as it is clear that the once considered ‘independent’ video-sharing websites such as YouTube and TikTok are now considered mainstream.
As such, YouTube and TikTok are in the firing line for restrictive regulation at any time from governments to enforce “mainstream status” via legal requirements.
This is especially relevant as revenues have ballooned and some independent content creators are making large amounts of money on these platforms.
Furthermore, the reach of independent content creators often far outstrips mainstream news outlets, and unfortunately, it is unlikely this will continue in its current form forever.

While the “Watch This Space” consultation is just a proposal and, for now, limited to the UK, content creators would be wise to sit up and take notice.

Entrepreneurs and content creators based in the UK should consider putting across their viewpoints to the consultation before the deadline of August 31 2026.
Creators both in and outside the UK should consider diversifying their video-sharing platforms early to avoid business disruption further down the line.
Bear in mind that eventually, if this proposal passes, other major platforms will be potentially forced to follow suit.
Therefore, entrepreneurs need to consider genuine independent platforms or develop their own websites to help mitigate demonetisation or downgrading of their video content.
Unfortunately, revenue from content creation is not protected by law, and your income stream can disappear overnight.
Savvy entrepreneurs would be wise to act early and start developing a following on other video-sharing platforms right away.
